A healthy smile never goes out of style! I am often asked about my favorite oral health products. Whether shopping for Christmas gifts or making your smile part of your New Year’s resolution, here is a list of a few of my favorite products out there. I’m not going to lie, I kind of feel like Oprah making her list of favorite things. Now I can’t promise that I’ll give you a new car, but I can promise you’ll find something on this list you will love.
Megan’s Favorite Toothbrush
I LOVE my Oral B Toothbrush. I often get asked if an electric toothbrush is better than a regular toothbrush. The answer is absolutely, without a doubt, YES! There was a study done a few years ago where people were told they needed to brush their teeth for 2 minutes. Knowing that they needed to go an entire two minutes, how long do you think they brushed for? 30 SECONDS!
Why is that story relevant? If nothing else, this toothbrush makes you brush the full 2 minutes. It has a built in timer and even tells you when it’s time to switch sections in your mouth. If you’re a total techy, it is Bluetooth enabled and connects to an app on your phone. It can give you loads of data about where you’re brushing and where to work on more. You can share that info with your dentist or hygienist.
Not in love with high tech? No worries! This toothbrush doesn’t need to be connected to your phone to work. I also love the different modes (such as whitening and sensitive), that it warns you when you’re putting too much pressure on your gums, and that the battery lasts days in between charges, making travel a no-brainer.
Megan’s Favorite Whitening Product
A whiter, brighter smile tops most people’s wish list. There’s about a million products out there, varying from over the counter to in office whitening. It’s no surprise people often ask me what option in the best for them.
There are many great options out there, but when it comes to what I personally use, Opalescence Gel in a custom whitening tray is my go-to. There are several strengths available, but I choose 35%. Why do I love this stuff? Using a custom tray minimizes the amount of gel you have to use and lessens wasted leakage out of the tray. This particular gel has ingredients in it that reduces sensitivity, which is a huge concern for many people taking the leap from OTC to professional strength. Trust me guys, this stuff works!
Megan’s Favorite Toothpaste
We’ve all stepped foot in a toothpaste aisle and been overwhelmed by the choices. Tartar control, whitening, sensitivity? How do you choose? Now, this is one aspect where my favorite product may not be the best choice for you. If you ever have any questions about the pros and cons of various toothpastes, I’d be happy to assist!
I have two favorite products when it comes to toothpaste, one you can get at any store and another that is by prescription only.
As a dental professional, I’ve had the chance to sample many of the popular toothpastes and I keep coming back to Crest Pro Health. I love the smooth formula. It doesn’t feel super gritty. The mint flavor is enough to give you fresh breath, but isn’t overpowering. And I love that it isn’t super abrasive, keeping your enamel in tip-top shape.
More recently, I have been using Prevident 5000 Sensitive for myself. This is available by prescription only. Not only is this toothpaste more effective at preventing cavities, but it also amazingly effective at eliminating sensitivity. I started using this toothpaste when I started bleaching my teeth. Although the bleach we use is great at reducing sensitivity, I’m one of those people who seem to experience more sensitivity than the average person. I am not exaggerating when I say I used this toothpaste once and my sensitivity was gone. This stuff is magic!
Megan’s Favorite Lip Balm
Megan, why are you writing about chapstick? Okay this is two-fold. The first part is dry lips are a real problem. Especially this time of year, we don’t want chapped lips to keep you from smiling! Secondly, everyone knows I have a Burt’s Bees chapstick on my person at all times. I seriously am obsessed with this stuff. So much so that my lips have rejected all other lip products out there. This stuff is awesome.
